Tea Cozy Hat
A Free pattern from The Knitting Fairy
Sizes: preemie (newborn, 6 months, 1 year)
150 yards (150 yards, 300 yards, 300 yards) sport weight yarn
US #5 needle
Please note the following and read the pattern carefully!
does indeed go with the hat pictured. It seems to throw lots of people,
however. (Including the owner of the knit shop where I work ) See if
these instructions don't make it a bit clearer.
You are knitting a series of THREE rows (Knit a row, purl a row, knit a row). These rows run from the edge of the cuff to the top (sideways) down the hat. You are knitting a rectangle which will appear to look like the inside of a piece of corrugated cardboard. You will whip stitch the cast on and bind off edges together to form a tube and then gather one end for the top.
6 sts = 1 inch on #5 needles
CO 36 (42,48,54) sts LOOSELY, leaving a 12 inch tail
Row 1: Knit across.
Row 2: Purl across.
Row 3: Knit across.
Row 4: Knit across. (note, two knit rows consecutively!!!)
Row 5: Purl across.
Row 6: Knit across.
Row 7: Knit across. (again, two knit rows consecutively)
Row 8: Purl across.
Row 9: Knit across.
Repeat rows 1, 2 AND 3 until piece measures 11 (14,16,18) inches slightly stretched.
Bind off loosely.
Whip stitch cast on and bind off edges together.
Thread tail onto tapestry needle and gather top tightly and secure tail.
Weave in ends.
Add a pom- pom or other topper to really make your hat unique!
