And we are back!

  • Posted on April 5, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Wasn’t DfwFiberFest a blast? It was great to see everyone and make so many new friends.  We are already making plans for next year!

Getting back to the shop has been quite a chore but Meagan, Betty Kay and I have finally gotten it all set back up, ready and waiting for you to come shop.  We did move things around (never miss a chance for a good spring cleaning!) so be sure to check around when you come in.

We have replaced our winter display of wooly-goodness with some light, summery cottons.  All 10 brand new colors of Riveting Sport from Kollage Yarns have just arrived and there is a display of Classic Elite‘s Seedling.  Meagan wore a Seedling sweater during FiberFest and loved it so much that she has been busy making plans for all the other sweaters she wants to knit as well.  I just finished a sweater in Ty-Dy cotton from Knit One, Crochet Too.  I made the Tee for Two sweater and I just love how it has come out.  A little washing and blocking and you will be able to see me wearing it around the shop.

Just before FiberFest I finished a lacy sweater in Cascade’s Ultra Pima DKAnnie sweater The colors on this yarn are just amazing and it was very comfortable to wear.  I am trying to decide what I am going to cast on for next… Meagan thinks I should knit her a sweater in Ultra Pima.  I haven’t come up with any great plans yet so I am just plugging along on my Beekeeper’s QuiltHexipuff flower #1 My sister tells me that my nephew needs a new sweater for the coming winter and he has gotten so big that he cannot fit under his baby blanket anymore (hint hint).  I see lots of little boy knitting coming soon.

Afghan DONE!

Entrelac blanket

I wove in the last end Thursday night. Isn’t it pretty? I had enough yarn left to start a quick little baby hat from the book 60 Quick Baby Knits

I am making the Ruffled Cloche.
Ruffled cloche

I don’t have a specific baby in mind yet, just wanted to use some of the left over Kraemer Perfection from my afghan. Speaking of Perfection, we got a shipment in yesterday. The shelf looks so pretty with all it’s colors back! Also speaking of new stuff, the boxes are starting to pile up around here with all the goodness that is arriving. Be sure to come by and see what’s new soon.

Lookie what I found!

I wanted to knit something that was interesting and new to me. Instead I ended up resurrecting a really old project! I am about 1/7th from finish and loving it! Wonder why I put it down? Do you have a long lost project in need of attention? Bring it for help Thurs night 7-9, just $10/person.

Maybe I will show you my peacock feathers shawl!

New Year’s Projects

  • Posted on January 7, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Christmas is over and the great push to get it all taken down and put away is on.  I got the studio finished yesterday (hurray!) and now to get to work on the house.  I am more in the mode of finishing things up than starting new and so I am working diligently on finishing my Ginny’s Cardigan.  Ginny’s Cardigan is a pattern by Medrith Glover and I will be leading the Handknitter’s Guild of North Central Texas through this project starting on January 25th.  It’s not too late to join us if you are interested, just drop me a line (alissa@knittingfairy.com) or give the studio a call to reserve your copy of the pattern.  I did order limited quantities, so call soon.

Beyond Ginny I am looking at a pile of unfinished socks.  I am looking forward to diving into that and seeing where I stand.

There are also some things that just can’t wait for me to get over my current spat of finishing.  My darling nephew, Holden, is in need of some mittens.  I made him three this week.  Yes, I made three and NO, Holden is not a mutant.  He has two hands, but like any one year old I figure he will loose his mittens so I made a spare.  When they are that tiny there is plenty of yarn on the ball and when it that cold he shouldn’t have to wait for his mad Auntie to get around to knitting another!  Now if he loses more than one we are going to have to talk…

I am also into quick, one skein projects and so my One Skein Wonders books are getting a heavy workout around the studio.  Everyone seems to be enjoying browsing through them and finding the perfect scarf, hat or quick set of fingerless mitts.  I know *I* want a new pair.  I noticed mine are a tad disreputable looking the other day.

What have you got going in the new year? Why not come by the studio and pick out something perfect to get you through these cold winter days?  We have some FABULOUS new yarns in.  Come play!

Is this your question?

I had an email this morning from Sue.  Sue asks

Hello,
While at the Stiches fest this weekend, I purchased a pattern of your entrelac baby blanket. I have a question about the yarn yardage -- is the yarn required a regular worsted weight and I would need about 1700 yards?
Thanks,
Sue C.

Sue did not leave me her email address so this is the best I could come up with for answering her.

Hi Sue,
The yardage requirements for the Entrelac Baby Blanket call for 4 skeins of Solana.  Solana has 320 yds/skein, so you will need 1280 yds total. Solana is a worsted weight yarn that gets 5 sts/inch on a US# 8 needle.

Hope that helps,
Alissa Barton

KFEntrelacBabyBlanketThursdays mean the Knitting Fairy Yarn Studio is open for business.  We have a drop in knitting class from 7-9pm, hope you can join us.  What will Alissa be knitting? Likely it will be this:

Our Entrelac Baby Blanket.  Now that the original has gone to it’s home and awaiting the arrival of Alicia next month it is time to make another from display.

Or maybe it will be a top down baby cardigan out of Perfection DK, or maybe an Iris Baby Dress out of Tatamy DK.  Any are likely given the number of new arrivals expected among the friends of the Fairy!  At least Baby knitting makes for good summer knitting.

I had a fabulous day with my family for Mother’s Day, I hope you did too.  This week we are back to our regularly scheduled events, Drop-in Knitting on Thursday from 7-9pm and Stitchin’ at the Studio on Sunday from 1-4pm.  Details on these events can be found in earlier posts this month.

CounterspellWhat’s new? I have been chosen to design and teach a shawl especially for the Dallas Handknitters Guild.  This shawl will be lace with an option for beading and will be presented in 4 programs, September, October, November and December.  I will post more on the details of each program as the dates draw nearer but for now I am busy swatching and designing.  Eventually, this pattern will be released as a Knitting Fairy pattern both for yarns we carry and Brooks Farm Yarn so if you are NOT a member of the DHKG (and why aren’t you a member?!) then hang in there, you can get yours too- but not until 2011!

Other news… Knitting Fairy is pleased to be the sponsor of Stitch It! podcast for the month of May.  To enter to win you must donate to the podcast and your name will be entered into a drawing to win a shawl kit for our Counterspell shawl.  Meghan does a fantastic job, we love her and we know you will too! Give her a listen and enter to win!!!

Blankie

finished largeI am still totally in love with entrelac and with the Entrelac Baby Blanket I IMG_2772designed and knitted with hand-dyed yarn by Brooks Farm Yarn but now I want to knit it in a yarn that we are carrying.

I don’t have a particular baby in mind but I have several candidates.

I decided to think girlish thoughts and start with pink.  The original blanket was knit in one color, I want to use three.  Butterfly, Bloom and Fluff.  Of course, you could use any number of colors – knit a whole rainbow if you like.

The pattern has 25 rows of triangles and squares, so my 3 should work out just fine. 8 repeats of my three colors and I will end the blanket with another row of Butterfly triangles. Perhaps I shall edge it with Butterfly as well.  I’ll keep you posted on its progress.
